Published in English by the German tourist office in September 1958, it raises the winter-sports ranges in snowy white relief, from the Harz, the Sauerland and the Eifel to the Black Forest, the Bavarian Forest and the Allgäu and Bavarian Alps, with Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Oberstdorf and Berchtesgaden, and links them with yellow routes. Yet the purple Bundesrepublik sits between a pink ‘Sowjetzone’ and the lost lands ‘unter polnischer Verwaltung’ (under Polish administration), with Berlin marooned in the east. The whole brochure is offered, and its glory is Heinrich Berann’s wraparound cover: skiers among snow-laden firs on one side, their evening by the fire on the other.
