Born in Halstead, Essex, he studied at the Royal College of Art and served as Head of Colchester School of Art (1926–29). Known for watercolours and decorative maps, he exhibited at the Royal Academy (1923–40). His works often blend topographical accuracy with an artistic, romanticised style. Lavenham is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval villages in England, its timber-framed buildings and winding lanes a lasting legacy of its prosperity during the Tudor cloth trade. Its architectural unity and rural charm make it a national treasure.
