The plate depicts High Street House, the second house on the site, rebuilt in red brick in 1679 in the Restoration style by Henry Streatfeild. In the early 19th century the house was remodelled in the Gothic style and renamed Chiddingstone Castle, before being sold to Lord Astor in 1938. During the Second World War it accommodated Canadian troops and was later used as a school. In 1955 the building was purchased by Denys Eyre Bower, who installed his extensive collections there. In 1957 Bower was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in 1962 following the successful demonstration of a miscarriage of justice. He returned to Chiddingstone Castle and continued to open it to the public until his death in 1977, when the house and its collections were bequeathed to the nation and remain publicly accessible today.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-8-006552a_904f826b-322d-424b-af1e-be3f2bf1d4ec.jpg?v=1770910931
goodnestone-park-house-seat-of-the-hon-sir-brook-bridges-kent-badeslade-1719-p-8-006556
Goodnestone Park House, Seat of the Hon.
