Around the station and Waterloo Underground station, the sheet also shows St John the Evangelist Church, the Daily Mirror Newspapers Ltd printing works, J. Sandell timber stores, Munro House and Elizabeth House. Bottling, engineering, repairs and storage around the railway extend this picture beyond the newspaper works and timber yard, showing the station's role in a working industrial neighbourhood. The arches at Leake Street have since acquired restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, with street art giving former service spaces a new public life. The church was restored after bomb damage in 1940 as the Festival of Britain church of 1951. Elizabeth House survives today and is the subject of 2026 proposals to convert it to hotels and homes. A G.L.C. school label at Baylis Road follows the 1965 reorganisation, when the London County Council was abolished. Goad kept these insurers' plans current with pasted slips recording changes of use, new layouts, clearances and rebuilding. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction is a vacancy note of March 1971 on an arch by the station's maintenance workshop, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Waterloo Road, York Road, Tenison Way, Stamford Street, Cornwall Road, Exton Street, Sandell Street, The Cut, Baylis Road, Westminster Bridge Road, Leake Street and Murphy Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001255a_8551702e-7182-49c5-a775-403612765459.jpg?v=1792149367
goad-london-268-271-se1-lambeth-westminster-bridge-road-waterloo-1889-1971-map-p-9-001258
Goad London 268–271—SE1—Lambeth—Westminster Bridge Road—Waterloo 1889 (1971) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 268–271 [Westminster Bridge Road, Waterloo Road, Kennington Road and Lambeth Road]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 268–271, covers Lambeth between Westminster Bridge Road, Waterloo Road and Lambeth Road (SE1), and it reveals the supporting economy that then lay behind the district's colleges and passenger railway. Campbell Buildings were railway dwellings of about 1890 for railway employees, and they were demolished in the early 1980s. The G.L.C. workshops and offices shown here maintained vehicles and municipal services. Morley College, founded in 1889, was rebuilt in 1958 after the Blitz destroyed its Victorian building, and it merged with Kensington and Chelsea College in 2020. Christ Church, also shown on the sheet, still keeps its Lincoln Tower of 1876, which was half paid for by Americans, and the sheet names St George's R.C. Primary School and Lambeth police station as well. Goad kept these underwriters' plans current with pasted overlays recording changed uses, revised layouts, demolition and new building. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction is an under-construction note of March 1971 on the G.L.C. garage and flats in block 2620, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971. Century House, which the sheet labels simply as offices, was MI6's headquarters from 1964 until the service moved to Vauxhall Cross in 1994. By 2003 it had become the Perspective apartments, as state secrets gave way to private homes. Morley College, where Gustav Holst directed the music from 1907 to 1924, appears in its rebuilt postwar complex. The Church Missionary Society offices and chapel then stood nearby, and the society itself left London for Oxford in 2007. On a nineteenth-century base plan overlaid with postwar redevelopment, the sheet also shows Christ Church and Upton Chapel, Lambeth police station and the Campbell Buildings railway dwellings, which were cleared in the early 1980s. Goad's fire-risk plans were kept current with pasted amendments for new uses, changed layouts, demolitions and new construction. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. Pasted revisions are present, but none on this sheet carries a date.
