Two adjoining 1:20,000 sheets, joined into a panorama nearly 1.7 metres wide, run from Albert and Beaumont-Hamel through Thiepval, Ovillers, La Boisselle and Pozières to High Wood, Longueval, Delville Wood, Ginchy, Flers and Combles, with the German trench system in red and the British front line in blue. Corrected to 28 April and 5 May 1916, this is the defensive network the infantry were ordered to cross on 1 July, when the British Army suffered more than 57,000 casualties in a day; at Flers, in September, tanks went into battle for the first time. Trenches, woods and valleys are named, from Mash Valley and Sausage Valley to Bailiff Wood. Many of the battle’s great memorials stand here now: Newfoundland’s at Beaumont-Hamel, the Ulster Tower and Lutyens’s Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval, the Lochnagar crater, Australia’s at Pozières and South Africa’s at Delville Wood.
