The reconstructed Angkor temple and contrasting national and colonial buildings give the scene an immediately recognisable character. Beneath its appeal as an illustrated visitor’s guide lies the exhibition’s political purpose: presenting empire as an ordered world of monuments, commerce and entertainment. Published as the official plan by Blondel La Rougery, the folding sheet combines practical orientation with the persuasive imagery of the event. It is particularly rewarding for its dense architectural detail and the now-vanished exhibition landscape in the Bois de Vincennes. Today the Boulevard Périphérique cuts across the western part of this vanished exhibition landscape: it passes beneath Avenue Daumesnil just east of the surviving Palais de la Porte Dorée, then curves south-west between the city and Lac Daumesnil towards Porte de Reuilly and Porte de Charenton. Covered stretches at Porte Dorée and Porte de Reuilly preserve surface access to the Bois de Vincennes.
