Published in 1989, it places this now-celebrated name on the map only about a year after its first vines were planted in 1988, and before its inaugural 1992 vintage. Other newcomers include Wyken in Suffolk and Carden Park in Cheshire, both planted in 1988, alongside established pioneers such as Hambledon and Three Choirs. Its 250 numbered vineyards extend across England and Wales to Jersey, accompanied by photographs and a colourful border of contemporary wine labels. Müller-Thurgau, Reichensteiner and other varieties on those labels evoke a different phase of British winegrowing, before today’s prominence of traditional-method sparkling wine. The road network adds period interest: the M40’s northern extension is outlined rather than shown as a completed through motorway, while the M3 still lacks its southern connection to the M27. The cover credits Geoffrey Bond of the English Vineyards Association with design and text, with additional design and production by E.S.R. Limited. Both a decorative wine map and an evocative record of an industry whose future stars were only beginning to take root.
