The work charts the spiritual journey of the protagonist, Christian, whose path toward the Celestial City is marked by temptations, diversions, and moral trials that threaten to lead him astray. Bunyan’s narrative lends itself naturally to visual interpretation, and many of its symbolic landscapes—such as the Slough of Despond, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and Vanity Fair—have become enduring images in Western literature. First published in 1678, The Pilgrim’s Progress has never been out of print and has been translated into more than two hundred languages. Scholars have also suggested that elements of its imagined geography may reflect places Bunyan encountered on his own journeys between Bedford and London.
