Its legend distinguishes coastal batteries, anti-aircraft guns, machine-gun posts, searchlights, pillboxes, barbed-wire entanglements, oil tanks, fortified zones and military and civil airfields, and even separates known positions from those only anticipated, a revealing glimpse of the intelligence work behind the victory. The airfields at Tengah, Sembawang and Seletar, the naval base and its docks, underground oil storage, the reservoirs and the waterworks fill the island; fortified zones ring the high ground of Bukit Timah, and minefields are hatched across the approaches. Batteries guard Changi, Pulau Tekong and Pulau Ubin in the east and Pengerang across the water in Johore, with more on Blakang Mati, today’s Sentosa, and neighbouring Pulau Brani. Fort Canning is marked as a battery; beneath it lay the Battle Box, the bunker in which Percival’s command decided to surrender on 15 February 1942. A note records positions and obstacles built along the shore, above and below the waterline. To the north, Johore Bahru and the Causeway frame the strait that Japanese troops crossed on the night of 8 February. Issued as one of two folding maps in the Malaya volume of Asahi Shimbun’s History of the Greater East Asia War, the plan carries a plain message: the more formidable the fortress, the greater the conquest. Printed in black, its dense symbols make a striking image of a colonial stronghold seen through its conquerors’ eyes. Based on Survey Department mapping, it records the street network, railway, harbour and named public buildings, with Queenstown, Bukit Timah, Serangoon and the airport at Paya Lebar extending beyond the densely built centre. Toa Payoh is still sparsely developed, before its transformation into a Housing and Development Board new town in the 1960s. Paya Lebar, marked as Singapore Airport, recalls the city’s international gateway before Changi opened in 1981. An enlarged inset follows the Singapore River through the commercial and civic district, identifying Raffles Place, City Hall, the Supreme Court and Clifford Pier. Its numbered grid and scales in miles and feet make this a practical street-reference map. The contrast between the tightly packed city centre and the more sparsely developed outskirts is especially clear.
