In January 1958 a fire in Union Cold Storage's basement beneath the Smithfield Poultry & Meat Market killed two firemen, and the Poultry Market was rebuilt by 1963 under a concrete dome. The Central Markets' General and Poultry Market buildings are now becoming London Museum, due to open from November 2026, with a major cultural use replacing food storage and sale. In 2024, however, the City abandoned the meat market's move to Dagenham, and traders are staying until at least 2028. Snow Hill Police Station was sold in 2020 for use as a hotel. Goad's plans were produced to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays noting changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1952, with a 1952 copyright date. Its latest dated correction is September 1969, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Charterhouse Street, Farringdon Street, Smithfield Street, West Smithfield, Holborn Viaduct, Giltspur Street, Cock Lane, Hosier Lane, East Poultry Avenue and West Poultry Avenue.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001106a_4f02eec3-bfc0-4c64-b65a-032c2e62c4fa.jpg?v=1792148994
goad-london-45-ec1-hatton-garden-holborn-circus-ely-pl-shoe-lane-1950-1969-map-p-9-001109
Goad London 45—EC1—Hatton Garden—Holborn Circus—Ely Pl—Shoe Lane 1950 (1969) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 45 [Hatton Garden, Farringdon Road, Holborn Circus and Ely Place]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 45, covers Hatton Garden and Ely Place (EC1), and it shows jewellers' workshops beside a gated medieval chapel. Jewellery workshops, engraving and photo-lithographic printing then packed the premises around Hatton Garden and Saffron Hill. This was the production behind the shopfronts, in a district where jewellery making and dealing still underpin the local economy. St Etheldreda's Church, the Bishops of Ely's chapel of the 1280s, has been Catholic again since 1874, and Ely Place remains gated and watched by its own beadle. Dickens housed the Plornishes in Bleeding Heart Yard and Fagin in Field Lane below Saffron Hill, where the former Punch printworks is now flats. The Atlantic House name survives on Holborn Viaduct as Hogan Lovells' London office, and the sheet also marks a GPO garage. Goad's plans were kept for assessing property and fire risk, and they were updated with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in April 1950, with a 1950 copyright date. At the time, cold storage and market distribution were prominent beside the railway, represented by Union Cold Storage and by the London Central Markets, with its fruit and vegetable market and cold store. The General Market is now empty and is being converted for London Museum, which is due to open from November 2026. The plan still labels the station Farringdon & High Holborn, a name that was dropped in 1936, and it marks the Metropolitan Railway, which opened here in 1863. The station's expansion for the Elizabeth line, which opened in 2022, put the emphasis on carrying passengers across London, and Cowcross Street has been rebuilt and pedestrianised. The sheet shows the London Central Meat Market surrounded and underpinned by cold stores and railway goods depots, with Grand Avenue, East Poultry Avenue, Lindsey Street and Long Lane among the streets around it. The sidings beneath the market closed in the 1960s, and in 2024 the City abandoned the move to Dagenham, with traders staying until at least 2028. Fabric, which has been in the renovated Metropolitan Cold Stores on Charterhouse Street since 1999, stands for the nightlife that followed. The LCC Smithfield Technical Institute taught butchery and refrigeration until it closed in the 1980s, and across Charterhouse Square the Charterhouse almshouse opened to the public in 2017. Insurers rated property and fire risk from these plans, which were kept current with pasted overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building.
