The island is divided into its three historic counties—Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey—and their constituent parishes, distinguished by contrasting colour. Railways and stations, main and parochial roads, towns and villages, post offices, churches and chapels, district court stations, estates and settlements, swamps and irrigation canals are recorded in considerable detail. Hachuring conveys the mountainous character of the interior, while the dense naming of rivers, bays, headlands, upland districts and coastal settlements provides a particularly informative picture of Jamaica at the close of the nineteenth century.
