This plan of the citadel of Troy, after W. Dörpfeld and W. Wilberg, picks out six of them in five colours: the pink primeval First City, the brown prehistoric Second City, the red Mycenaean Sixth City, the green Greek Seventh and Eighth Cities and the blue Temple of Athena and theatres of Roman Ilion, with unexcavated ground washed yellow. Dörpfeld, Schliemann’s successor at the site, believed the red Sixth City was Homer’s Troy, the city of Priam and the Trojan Horse; the key even marks a great well ‘filled up at the destruction of the city by the Greeks’. Later excavators preferred its rebuilt successor, Troy VIIa. No one knows which gate the horse came through, but one ancient tradition has the Trojans breaking the lintel of the Scaean Gate, the Iliad’s gate to the battlefield, to drag it in; on this plan the natural candidate is A, the Sixth City’s main gate, beside the great tower E. Drawn and engraved by Walker & Cockerell, it matches the plan illustrated in a Macmillan guide published in 1908, supporting the approximate date; the edition of this loose impression is unconfirmed.
