W. & A. K. Johnston’s oval composition places Gleneagles at the heart of 5,000 square miles of Scottish Highlands and Lowlands, from Balmoral to the Borders and Mull to the North Sea. Roads and railways thread shaded hills, while castles and country houses appear in profile. Literary associations include Rob Roy Country, Lady of the Lake Country and the probable route of David Balfour in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped. An inset charts the LMS railway network, and the map folds into pictorial covers bearing its original price of half a crown.
