Inside a laurel wreath the title reads "The Canarie or Fortunate Ilands by Rt. Morden", echoing the classical Insulae Fortunatae, and the sea is boldly lettered "The Atlantick Ocean". All seven Canaries are drawn and named — Lancerota, Fortuentura, Canaria, Teneriffa with its Pico, Gomera, Palma and Ferro — with the Salvages (Selvagens) and Madeira above, on a numbered graticule. Morden's text beneath rehearses Pliny's and Ptolemy's names for the islands, and describes Lancerotta (Lanzarote) as the first made subject to the Crown of Castile, adding "discovered 1393" in that island's account. A charming early English map for collectors of the Canaries and the Atlantic islands.
