The flagship was there from 1994 until early 2021, and IKEA followed from 1 May 2025. That succession shows the changing forms of mass-market shopping, while the gown factories and cloth warehouses that then stood behind Oxford Street reveal its less visible manufacturing and wholesale economy. At 48 Margaret Street, however, the map's clothing-trade labels conceal the Speakeasy, the musicians' club of 1966–78 where the Jimi Hendrix Experience performed on 19 January 1967. Its address is identifiable, but the club itself is not named or recorded as such. C&A Modes, which had been in Britain since 1922, closed all 109 of its British stores in 2000–01, and the Midland Bank was renamed HSBC in June 1999. These working sheets were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction identified here is a vacancy note behind 233–235 Oxford Street, dated November 1968. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and a key plan covering this area, acquired with the same group of maps, records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Regent Street, Great Portland Street, Great Titchfield Street, Margaret Street, Great Castle Street, Market Place, Argyll Street, Little Argyll Street, Hills Place, Ramillies Street and Ramillies Place.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001099a_022d8667-240d-422a-a7b0-b03b4dd17d0f.jpg?v=1792148988
goad-london-231-w1-fitzrovia-wells-oxford-streets-all-saints-1956-1970-map-p-9-001100
Goad London 231—W1—Fitzrovia—Wells & Oxford Streets—All Saints 1956 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 231 [Fitzrovia: Oxford Street, Wells Street, All Saints Margaret Street and Bourne & Hollingsworth]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 231, covers Fitzrovia, Oxford Street and All Saints Margaret Street (W1), where gown and costume factories then crowded the streets behind the department stores, particularly around Margaret Street and Eastcastle Street. The sheet is a revealing record of the West End clothing trade of its day, with shops below and workrooms above. All Saints, Butterfield's Grade I masterpiece, was consecrated in 1859 and remains an Anglo-Catholic church. Bourne & Hollingsworth, which had been on the Berners Street corner since 1902, closed in 1983 and became the Plaza, and the building has been Next's flagship since 2018. Waring & Gillow's building of 1906 survives today as shops with offices above, and it is Grade II listed. The sheet also names F. W. Woolworth and the Polytechnic School of Management Studies, which was part of what is now the University of Westminster. Goad's plans were made for assessing property and fire risk, and they were corrected with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction on this sheet is October 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, and a key plan covering this area, acquired with the same group of maps, records corrections to October 1970. This was the making and wholesaling of clothes, rather than the retailing of nearby Oxford Street. These garment warehouses passed to photographic studios from the 1970s and then to media firms, and the fashion trade that remains today is mainly made up of wholesalers and head offices. The Polytechnic Portland Street Extension belonged to the Regent Street Polytechnic, which became the University of Westminster in 1992 and still has buildings on Great Portland Street. The sheet also marks basement garages and car parks. Goad's plans were kept for assessing property and fire risk, and they were corrected with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction here is an under-construction note of October 1970 at 63–65 Mortimer Street and 33–35 Great Titchfield Street.
