L. Bowley’s Standard Guide Book of about 1947–48, with the islands tinted pink and the course of the RMS Scillonian drawn twice, once for high tide and once for low, a reminder that the ferry’s way into St Mary’s depended on the water. St Mary’s, Tresco, Bryher, St Martin’s, St Agnes, Gugh and Samson are shown with their roads, footpaths, churches, lighthouses and quays, together with the airport, the golf links, Star Castle and the boat routes between the islands, out to the Eastern and Western Isles. Signed H.B.H., the map comes with its illustrated guidebook, so the practical geography and the holiday reading travel together. Bowley’s introduction is dated 1946; this issue is probably a little later. The guide names British European Airways, which took over the Scilly service in 1947, but still calls Penzance a G.W.R. station, favouring the period around railway nationalisation in January 1948. Its reference to George VI as the reigning king also points to composition before his death in 1952.
