The chart closely reflects the pioneering hydrographic survey undertaken by Royal Navy officer Thomas Hannaford Hurd between 1789 and 1797. Because the Admiralty did not publish Hurd’s official chart until 1827, Heather’s issue is regarded as an early, unofficial—and possibly unauthorised—appearance of that survey information. Engraved by John Stephenson for Wiiliam Heather at the Navigation Warehouse in Leadenhall Street, it is one of the earliest detailed printed charts of Bermuda based on modern hydrography.
