At the time the Prudential Assurance Company filled the block between Holborn, Brooke Street, Leather Lane and Beauchamp Street, occupying Alfred Waterhouse's red terracotta headquarters of 1876–1901. Prudential left the building in 1999 but still owns it as Holborn Bars, which is now used for offices and venues. William Hodge \u0026amp; Chilver's printing premises then stood beside the jewellery and watch premises, revealing a broader working district than Hatton Garden's jewellery reputation alone implies. The street itself remains the jewellery centre today, with nearly 300 trade businesses. Leather Lane's weekday market now feeds the lunchtime office crowd, and Holborn Circus, which dates from 1867, had its Prince Albert statue of 1874 moved aside in 2014. Insurers used these plans to rate property and fire risk, and they kept them current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in April 1958, with a 1958 copyright date. Its latest dated correction is September 1969, and key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Jewellery workshops, engraving and photo-lithographic printing then packed the premises around Hatton Garden and Saffron Hill. This was the production behind the shopfronts, in a district where jewellery making and dealing still underpin the local economy. St Etheldreda's Church, the Bishops of Ely's chapel of the 1280s, has been Catholic again since 1874, and Ely Place remains gated and watched by its own beadle. Dickens housed the Plornishes in Bleeding Heart Yard and Fagin in Field Lane below Saffron Hill, where the former Punch printworks is now flats. The Atlantic House name survives on Holborn Viaduct as Hogan Lovells' London office, and the sheet also marks a GPO garage. Goad's plans were kept for assessing property and fire risk, and they were updated with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet shows the works' reel storage, machine spaces and engineering accommodation, exposing the factory behind the newspaper. Owen Williams's Mirror building overlooked Holborn Circus from 1961 until 1994. Its replacement by the 33 Holborn office development, which has been Sainsbury's headquarters since 2001, marks the loss of a major manufacturing workplace from the City fringe. On the sheet, Mirror House, the W. H. Smith \u0026amp; Sons premises and a computer centre appear alongside Buchanan House, Prestige House and Halton House. Field House, on Breams Buildings, is today an immigration and asylum tribunal hearing centre. These working plans were drawn for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is an upper-floor vacancy note of September 1969 at 83 Fetter Lane. All of this has given way to the Plumtree Court development, which opened as Goldman Sachs' European headquarters in 2019. The exchange's Dorothy Annan murals of 1960 went to the Barbican in 2013, and the Standard stopped daily printing in 2024.
