The Survey and Mapping Office subsequently operated within the Lands Department from 1982, the Buildings and Lands Department from 1986, and the Lands Department again from 1993.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePublications ranged from detailed 1:1,000 plans in the HP1S and HP1C series to 1:5,000 HP5C surveys and 1:20,000 HM20C colour maps for wider use. The examples here record Ma Tau Wai and Ho Man Tin building by building, To Kwa Wan’s industrial waterfront beside Kai Tak, Deep Bay’s villages and fishponds around Lau Fau Shan, and eastern Lantau around Silver Mine Bay and Discovery Bay. The map predates the 1995 designation of Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, giving the fishponds and coast added environmental-historical resonance. Sheet 2-SW-C belongs to the monochrome HP5C series, compiled from the Government’s 1:1,000 basic mapping and updated from aerial photographs and field survey records for planners, architects, engineers and developers. Its date is particularly resonant: Discovery Bay’s first residential phase went on sale in 1980, yet the surrounding transport and resort landscape remained at an early stage. Penny’s Bay retains the coast later remade by reclamation for Hong Kong Disneyland, opened in 2005; the sheet also predates the Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Mun bridges, North Lantau Highway, airport railway and Discovery Bay tunnel. The airport itself now lies west of this sheet. HM20C was the Government’s general-purpose colour series, used by schools, hikers and scouts as well as ordinary map readers. Individual buildings, factory and utility compounds, roads, piers and shoreline works reveal how closely housing and industry were interwoven: the gas works, Sung Wong Toi Road, ferry-pier area and Kai Tak Airport’s edge are legible, with the survey continuing south towards Hok Yuen. The joined format allows the waterfront to be read as a whole; contrasting pink and yellow paper tones make their physical union immediately visible. Both were compiled in January 1974, but their different full-revision dates—August 1980 for 11-NE-16A and August 1979 for 11-NE-16C—mean the composite cannot predate August 1980. It preserves an industrial harbour landscape before Kai Tak’s 1998 closure and the area’s subsequent redevelopment, including the later arrival of the Tuen Ma line and Sung Wong Toi station. Finding these two adjacent revisions already joined gives this example particular documentary and display interest.
