The chart records soundings, anchorages and coastal features along this hazardous stretch of the Brazilian littoral. It was undertaken in connection with the salvage operations following the loss of H.M.S. Thetis, wrecked off Cape Frio on 5 December 1830 with the loss of twenty-two crew. The vessel, returning from the Pacific station under Captain Samuel Burgess, carried a substantial cargo of bullion, much of which was subsequently recovered in one of the most notable salvage efforts of the period.
