In the sheet's day, the John Harvard Secondary Boys School here honoured the Southwark butcher's son, baptised in 1607, who gave Harvard University its name. This outline was reissued in November 1952, and it records streets, building footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. The school premises and earlier plots survive on this outline, while later coloured revisions record educational and postal uses, further clearance and the large printing, binding and garage premises of H.M. Stationery Office. Its publishing arm became The Stationery Office in 1996. The sheet also names Grotto Court and the Southern Region Railway approaches. Goad's sheets were working documents for weighing property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted overlays whenever uses changed or buildings were replaced. No later pasted building corrections have been identified on this outline edition, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Risborough Street, Loman Street, Pocock Street, Sawyer Street, Pepper Street, Sturge Street, Glasshill Street, King's Bench Street and Argent Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001236a_37210e3b-92cb-4d87-b970-582d64c382eb.jpg?v=1792149311
goad-london-249-se1-southwark-hmso-great-suffolk-union-streets-1952-1971-map-p-9-001237
Goad London 249—SE1—Southwark—HMSO—Great Suffolk & Union Streets 1952 (1971) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 249 [Southwark: Great Suffolk Street, Union Street, Copperfield Street and H.M. Stationery Office then ran a manufacturing complex. Rotary printing, typecasting, binding and paper storage filled a whole block beside St Stephen's Parliamentary Press, so government publishing here was factory work rather than office routine. HMSO's publishing arm was privatised in 1996 as The Stationery Office. The sheet shows the former John Harvard school as the John Harvard Teachers Centre, beside a separate parcel post sorting office. Schweppes premises are recorded too, as is Laystall Engineering, which was founded in 1903 and is now in Wolverhampton. The sheet also names the National Provincial Insurance Co.'s glass warehouse and offices, a government garage and a recreation ground. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and this sheet carries numerous pasted slips recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated slip, of March 1971, marks premises in block 2371 vacant. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Here C. C. Dane Ltd's saw and knife factory stood near warehouses for Associated Newspapers and the Bass Charrington Vintners wines, spirits and beers warehouse. Associated Newspapers left the Fleet Street district for Kensington at the end of the 1980s. Printers' and electrical-goods warehouses rounded out this mix of metalworking, print supply and wholesale trade, which sat among an L.C.C. school, flats and shops. Lant Street, where the young Charles Dickens lodged in 1824 while his father was in the Marshalsea, also crosses the sheet. Goad revised these risk plans with pasted overlays as uses changed and as buildings were altered, demolished or replaced. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The sheet's latest dated corrections are vacancy labels on amended blocks, dated March 1971, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971. Close by stood Peabody Square's housing and the Ophthalmic Hospital, which was founded in 1857 as the South London Ophthalmic Hospital and closed in 1980. Its site now holds London South Bank University's McLaren House residence, which opened in 1994. The St George's Circus obelisk of 1771, which is named on the sheet, was removed in 1897. From 1905 it stood in front of the old Bethlem Hospital, which later became the Imperial War Museum, until its return in 1998.
