After the French defeat at Gravelotte, Marshal François Bazaine withdrew the Army of the Rhine into Metz, where it was swiftly encircled by German forces under Prince Friedrich Karl. Repeated French breakout attempts at Noisseville and Bellevue failed, and with food supplies exhausted, Bazaine surrendered the fortress and 193,000 men on 27 October — one of the largest capitulations in European history. The fall of Metz freed the German armies for further operations in the Loire and led to the city’s annexation into the German Empire under the Treaty of Frankfurt (1871). A historically significant map from the decisive opening phase of the war.
