Its banner, “Deutsches Selbstbestimmungsrecht!” (“German right of self-determination”), and shaded language areas and white state boundaries purport to substantiate Germany’s claim that Versailles and Saint-Germain divided the “German peoples” among twelve states and denied more than fifteen million Germans reunion with the “Motherland.” LIFE presents it as a territorial programme exploiting post-war resentment to justify Nazi expansion.
