Waterlow & Sons' Finsbury works is shown with its paper storage, type casting and printing. It belonged to banknote printers bought by Purnell in 1961, and that side of the business passed to De La Rue. At the time, Metcalfe & Cooper printers, S. Oppenheimer & Sons, W. H. Smith & Son's warehouse, Paul Street Garage and the Territorial Army Centre stood among printers and engravers. Those printers and engravers were publishing's manufacturing side, which came before today's media, technology and creative trades. Appold Street and Wilson Street now edge Broadgate, built over Broad Street station, which closed in 1986. Kept for insurers rating property and fire risk, the sheet carries pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. They include vacancy notes of June 1966 and June 1968, a June 1968 construction note in block 1286, and March 1970 vacancies, which are the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Luke Street, Scrutton Street, Clifton Street, Phipp Street, Holywell Row, Worship Square, Dysart Street, Curtain Road and Finsbury Market.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001150a_509a6166-939d-427c-a75b-ef833b7d489a.jpg?v=1792149094
goad-london-145-ec2-shoreditch-paul-old-great-eastern-streets-1954-1970-map-p-9-001152
Goad London 145—EC2—Shoreditch—Paul, Old & Great Eastern Streets 1954 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 145 [Shoreditch: Great Eastern Street, Old Street, Leonard Street and Rivington Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 145, covers Shoreditch's Great Eastern Street, Old Street and Rivington Street (EC2), and it reveals the productive economy that then lay behind them. Here, printers, clothing factories and textile warehouses stood alongside tea-packing and blending works, cabinetmakers' supplies and furniture workshops. Ridgways' tea-packing and blending works belonged to Queen Victoria's tea blenders, who were granted a royal warrant in 1886 and whose Her Majesty's Blend is still sold. St Michael's Church on Mark Street, designed by James Brooks and dating from 1865, closed in 1964 and was an architectural salvage showroom from 1978 to 2019. In the sheet's day, Greenman's cabinetmakers' supplies, Victoria Chambers, the Post Office Training School and furniture factories and other furniture premises filled a district that media and technology later took over. The sheet was amended for fire-risk assessment with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts and rebuilding. Its latest dated corrections, from March 1970, include vacancy and construction annotations. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1954, with a 1954 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Tabernacle Square, Tabernacle Street, Singer Street, Leonard Street, Leonard Square, Paul Street, Luke Street, Willow Street, Blackall Street, Garden Walk and Kiffen Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001152a_59db2539-722b-44fd-84d2-51a3683628a3.jpg?v=1792149095
goad-london-149-ec2-shoreditch-curtain-road-great-eastern-street-1950-1970-map-p-9-001156
Goad London 149—EC2—Shoreditch—Curtain Road—Great Eastern Street 1950 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 149 [Shoreditch: Curtain Road, Great Eastern Street, Scrutton Street and Holywell Lane]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 149, covers Great Eastern Street, Curtain Road and Holywell Lane (EC2) as they were when the district made, stocked and serviced goods, long before creative businesses and nightlife arrived. Its premises then included Brown Brothers' motor-trade warehouses, furniture and clothing factories, Brodies' ships' stores and the London Electricity Board's Hearn Street substation. The Security Express van park served the Shoreditch depot of the 1983 robbery, which was then Britain's biggest theft of cash. The London Midland railway viaduct lost its trains when Broad Street closed in 1986, and today it carries Village Underground's rooftop tube carriages above a venue that opened in 2007. In 2012 Hewett Street yielded the Curtain Theatre of 1577, Romeo and Juliet's playhouse.
