On this sheet the Astoria is still a cinema and dance hall, not yet the concert venue Londoners remember. Its later rock history included Nirvana on 3 December 1989 and Radiohead's filmed concert of 27 May 1994, released as Live at the Astoria. It closed in 2009 and was demolished for the Crossrail works at Tottenham Court Road, which cleared neighbouring premises and reshaped this corner of Soho. The rebuilt Underground station gained Elizabeth line platforms in May 2022. The Hospital for Women, the world's first gynaecological hospital, closed in 1989, while St Patrick's Church remains in use. The House of St Barnabas, the homelessness charity that had been at 1 Greek Street since 1862, closed in January 2024, and Nascreno House is also marked. Film developing and printing, recording studios, gramophone-record premises and music publishers reveal the production trades behind Soho's entertainment venues. That role continues in a different form at Soho Square Studios, whose work now includes sound for film, television and games, as well as podcast production. Goad's plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction, November 1970, is a vacancy note on premises north of Falconberg Court and east of Falconberg Mews. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Oxford Street, Frith Street, Bateman Street, Sutton Row and Manette Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001094a_46cbd43b-a405-44ed-9f10-924b333d9fcf.jpg?v=1792148987
goad-london-226-w1-wc2-soho-cambridge-circus-palace-theatre-1944-1970-map-p-9-001095
Goad London 226—W1/WC2—Soho—Cambridge Circus—Palace Theatre 1944 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 226 [Soho: Cambridge Circus, Shaftesbury Avenue, Old Compton Street and the Palace Theatre]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 226, covers Soho from Old Compton Street to Cambridge Circus (W1 and WC2), the theatreland beside Chinatown. Collcutt's Palace Theatre of 1891 commands the Circus and has housed Harry Potter and the Cursed Child since 2016. On Old Compton Street, the Casino Theatre was a Cinerama house in the sheet's day, and it took back its original name, the Prince Edward, for the premiere of Evita in 1978. The Jacey Cinema on Charing Cross Road at Cambridge Circus, which by then was showing Continental films, closed in 1987 and became the Marquee Club's third home in 1988, hosting early appearances by Oasis and PJ Harvey before closing in the mid-1990s; it is now a pub. That musical phase lay ahead, while two folk venues were already operating nearby. The restaurant-and-clubs label at 49 Greek Street marks Les Cousins, the folk club which opened in 1965 and closed in April 1972, where Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Paul Simon, John Martyn and Sandy Denny played; its booking diary records Van Morrison on 26 April 1966. At 27 Litchfield Street, the basement restaurant label identifies Bunjies, where Al Stewart held a residency in 1965 and which continued until 1999. No. 22 Frith Street housed John Logie Baird’s laboratory, where he demonstrated working television to members of the Royal Institution on 26 January 1926. Across the street, Ronnie Scott’s at No. 47 was the setting for Jimi Hendrix’s final public performance, when he joined Eric Burdon and War on 16 September 1970. Gerrard Street, home to a settled Chinese community by 1970, became the pedestrianised heart of Chinatown in the late 1980s, and the Fire Station on Shaftesbury Avenue was rebuilt alongside in 1983. Goad's plans were drawn up for fire-risk assessment, and they were maintained with pasted overlays as uses and buildings changed; the latest dated correction on this sheet is October 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to October 1970.
