As noted on the map, the triangulation and terrestrial photogrammetry fieldwork, and subsequent analysis, was conducted by the mountaineer and cartograper Erwin Schneider during the 1955 International Himalaya Expedition. It was described in the "History of Cartography" as "a masterpiece of reconnaissance surveying". The detail made possible by Schneider’s careful ground survey and the artistry of Fritz Ebster, who turned field sketches into the relief-like reproduction of bedrock, moraines, and glaciers, is commendable. The river cuts through a series of rises and plateaux, forming wide plains covered with shells and shingle. Darwin discussed with FitzRoy his interpretation that these terraces were ancient shorelines, gradually raised in line with Lyell's geological theories. Darwin summarized this speculation in his essay on the Elevation of Patagonia, tentatively challenging some of Lyell’s ideas. Drawing on measurements taken by the Beagle's officers, as well as his own, Darwin proposed that the plains were raised in stages by large-scale forces acting over a wide area, rather than through continuous small-scale movements. Following the reconnaissance mission of 1921 and the expeditions of 1922 and 1924, it was the third such expedition specifically aimed at achieving the first ascent of Everest. Although the expedition failed to summit, in two separate attempts, Lawrence Wager and Percy Wyn-Harris, followed by F. S. Smythe, set a new altitude record for climbing without supplemental oxygen—a record that remained unbroken until 1978. During Wager and Wyn-Harris's climb, they discovered the ice axe of Andrew Irvine, who, alongside George Mallory, had vanished during their 1924 summit attempt.

Americas. Compiled from Philby’s own field surveys, the map records wadis, wells, settlements, routes, and relief across a remote and little-mapped region at a critical moment in the consolidation of Ibn Saud’s power. Harry St John Bridger Philby was one of the most influential British Arabists and explorers of the period, later becoming a close adviser to Ibn Saud and converting to Islam; he was also the father of Kim Philby, notorious British Intelligence officer, Soviet double agent, and member of the Cambridge Five. Original lithographed map prepared under the direction of Richard Henry Major—map librarian of the British Museum from 1844 to 1880—and issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society, to accompany Major’s article, “The Site of the Lost Colony of Greenland Determined, and Pre-Columbian Discoveries of America Confirmed, from 14th-Century Documents.” The map visualises the geography described in the controversial Zeno Narrative, a purported late-14th-century account of North Atlantic voyages attributed to the Venetian Zeno brothers, who were said to have reached lands in North America beyond Greenland and Iceland, which they named Estotiland and Drogeo. In his accompanying essay, Major argued that the evidence “show[s] that at that period, which was a hundred years before the great voyage of Columbus across the Atlantic, there still existed remains of the ancient Scandinavian colonists in North America.” A leading Victorian authority on historical cartography, Major here exemplifies 19th-century scholarly efforts to reassess medieval sources and the possibility of pre-Columbian exploration of the North Atlantic.

'Route Map of the Expedition to the Tian-Shan, Nan-Shan and Eastern Tibet of the Brothers Grum Grijimailo to 9ᵗʰ October 1889'

Original lithographed route map compiled by William Shawe and issued under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society, documenting the major Central Asian expedition of Grigory Grum-Grzhimailo (1860–1936) and his younger brother, Lieutenant M. Each map captures the known world at a specific historical moment, with the boundaries of discovery rendered as a luminous field of light encircled by swirling clouds of darkness and ignorance. As history advances and the discovery frontier pushes outward, the clouds recede—a striking visual metaphor for the perceived progress of civilisation and learning. The series begins with Eden and concludes with a world free of clouds, though not entirely free of geographical uncertainty. E. Cheesman during 1923–1924. The map traces routes between the Persian Gulf port of ʿOqair and the inland Jabrin Oasis, passing through the Al-Ahsa Oasis and its hinterland. During this period, Cheesman undertook the first systematic mapping of the Arabian coast between the Gulf of Salwah and ʿOqair, fixed the position of Hofuf, and identified the site of the ancient trading city of Gerrha. He presented his findings directly to Ibn Saʿud at his court in Hofuf, and this work later earned him the Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical Society. An English military officer, explorer, ornithologist, and author, Cheesman’s Al-Ahsa expedition was notable not only for its cartographic achievements but also for its scientific significance. During the journeys depicted on this map he collected over 300 zoological specimens, several previously unknown to science and now held by the British Museum; among these was Cheesman’s gerbil (Gerbillus cheesmani), named in his honour. Published at a time when much of eastern Arabia remained poorly mapped by European surveyors, this map represents a significant advance in Western geographic knowledge of the region. It stands as a key document of early 20th-century Arabian exploration and a direct precursor to later expeditions, including those of Wilfred Thesiger, before oil development and mechanised transport transformed the Arabian interior.

'North Polar Regions'

Circular polar projection map titled “North Polar Regions,” published in the Nautical Magazine, May 1834. The vessel first visited on 23 July 1834, where Darwin wrote that he had “got scent of some fossil bones… if gold or galloping will get them, they shall be mine.” After exploring the surrounding countryside, he procured horses and, on 14 August, set off into the volcanic Andes, ascending Cerro La Campana and visiting a copper mine before continuing to Santiago. The Beagle called at Valparaíso for a second time on 11 March 1835; upon his return from another Andean excursion “with half a mule’s load” of specimens, Darwin wrote to his family that his discoveries, if confirmed, would be crucial to the “theory of the formation of the world.” His Chilean observations — including the 1835 earthquake and marine fossils found high in the Andes — proved formative in shaping his geological thinking, later foundational to his evolutionary theory.
