Holy Trinity Church, Francis Bedford's building of 1823–24, was disused when the London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras chose it in 1970. It reopened in 1975 as the Henry Wood Hall for orchestral rehearsal and recording, and so it joins the square's religious past to a musical present. Reissued in December 1943, this outline records streets, footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. It preserves the small plots around Rockingham Street and Falmouth Road, which later coloured revisions show replaced by larger housing blocks, with tenements under construction in March 1971. These working plans were drawn to price property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding. A key plan for this area acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Great Suffolk Street, Trinity Street, Stones End Street, Borough Road, Harper Road, Trio Place, Swan Street, Bath Terrace, Meadow Row and Arch Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001244a_6f312014-c64a-446e-b128-9b7bea05594e.jpg?v=1792149337
goad-london-253-se1-borough-high-st-trinity-church-sq-harper-rd-1943-1971-map-p-9-001245
Goad London 253—SE1—Borough High St—Trinity Church Sq—Harper Rd 1943 (1971) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 253 [Borough High Street, Newington Causeway, Trinity Church Square and Rockingham Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 253, covers Borough from Newington Causeway to Trinity Church Square and Harper Road (SE1), taking in courts, police and a church turned concert hall. Holy Trinity Church survives as the Henry Wood Hall, opened in 1975 for orchestral rehearsal and recording. This makes a quiet counterpart to the housing redevelopment on the sheet, where larger blocks replace small plots around Rockingham Street and Falmouth Road, with tenements under construction in March 1971. Borough police station is still Southwark's police station, but the Inner London Quarter Sessions Courts 6 and 7 disappeared when quarter sessions were abolished on 1 January 1972. In the sheet's day, the County Court (juvenile), the G.P.O. sorting office and Victoria Hall anchored the changing street pattern. Goad's plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The tenement work of March 1971 is the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in December 1943, with a 1950 copyright date, and a key plan for this area acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. The cleared streets south of New Kent Road became the Heygate Estate, which was completed in 1974 and demolished in 2011–14. The land is now Elephant Park, planned for some 3,000 homes around a large park. St Matthew's Church, built in 1867 and demolished in 1992, appears with St Matthew's Hall, and the church's successor now stands on Meadow Row. The sheet also names the Rachel McMillan College annexe, Cranleigh Mission School, Falmouth Chambers, Plymouth Chambers, a Board School, a piano warehouse and the Elephant and Castle railway approaches. Around Chatteris Square, the sheet shows clearance replacing the earlier buildings. The plans were made to help insurers weigh fire risk, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, demolition and new building, which here sit beneath a 1901 heading. The printed base heading is dated June 1901, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction, a New Kent Road vacancy, is from March 1971, matching the key plan acquired with the group. These small streets and plots gave way to the Heygate Estate, which was completed in 1974 and was itself demolished in 2011–14 for Elephant Park. The outline therefore preserves an earlier, more finely divided neighbourhood. The sheet names St Matthew's Church, which was pulled down in 1992, together with Falmouth Chambers, a Board School, Elephant and Castle station and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. Here the buildings around Chatteris Square were still standing, before the clearance shown in later coloured revisions. Those revisions also carry New Kent Road vacancy information dated March 1971. Outline plans served fire insurance assessment, giving footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured sheets, and they took pasted overlays recording changes of use, demolition and new construction. The printed base heading is dated June 1901, and the pasted revisions on this sheet carry no dates. A key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971.
