Its military contribution goes beyond reissuing an Ordnance Survey sheet: the southeastern quarter was compiled from Headquarters Northern Ireland information and aerial photography, supplementing three quarters derived from civilian plans. Yellow roads, explicitly added in 1975, and a magenta grid made routes and locations easier to identify and communicate. At 1:2,500, premises, gardens and approach routes provide the close detail needed for patrol briefings and searches. Comber Road, Old Dundonald Road and the disused railway connect dense housing with farmland. The Army’s revisions turn civilian survey material into security mapping of Belfast’s eastern fringe.
