Fire Brigade station and training school. The station closed in January 2014 after 135 years, and the training centre closed in May 2015. The site now holds Brigade Court homes and Haberdashers' Borough Academy, which has been here since September 2020. The Evelina Hospital, which was founded in 1869 and is shown with its nursing school, closed in 1976. The sheet also names All Hallows and St Michael and All Angels churches, Duthy Hall, Trundle House, Waynflete House, Tomline House and the Ministry of Social Security offices. Printing-machinery suppliers, machine shops and engineers around Union Street, with electrical-equipment premises near Mint Street and Trundle Street, reveal a network of production and supply behind the larger institutions. Bankside's later Low Line projects have sought new business and cultural uses for the railway arches, adapting the infrastructure that once supported this industrial quarter. Goad's plans were kept for fire-risk assessment and took pasted overlays, and on this sheet a cleared larger block and updated Mint Street and fire-brigade uses replace the smaller plots of earlier outline editions. Mint Street premises marked vacant in March 1971 are the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Union Street, Great Guildford Street, Copperfield Street, Pepper Street, Sawyer Street, Doyce Street, Quilp Street, Leigh Hunt Street, Weller Street, Trundle Street, Marshalsea Road and Clennam Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001238a_926182f3-19d9-46bc-b5f2-d13288cdafd3.jpg?v=1792149315
goad-london-250-se1-borough-marshalsea-southwark-bridge-roads-mint-st-1946-map-p-9-001239
Goad London 250—SE1—Borough—Marshalsea & Southwark Bridge Roads—Mint St 1946 map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 250 [Southwark Bridge Road, Copperfield Street, Union Street and Marshalsea Road — uncoloured outline]

Goad's uncoloured outline fire insurance plan of London, sheet 250, covers Southwark Bridge Road, Mint Street and Lant Street (SE1), with the footprints of the fire-brigade premises, which were London's brigade headquarters until 1937. The station closed in January 2014 and the training centre in May 2015, and the site is now occupied by Brigade Court homes and Haberdashers' Borough Academy. Reissued in December 1946, this outline records streets, building footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. It preserves the smaller plots of the Mint Street district, while later coloured revisions record clearance of a larger block and changed occupancies. The sheet also names Duthy Hall and the railway approaches. Goad's sheets were working tools for weighing property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays as uses changed and buildings were replaced. Little Dorrit Court recalls the heroine born in the Marshalsea prison, which closed in 1842. While his father was held there, the boy Dickens lodged in Lant Street in 1824. Red Cross Way holds Octavia Hill's Red Cross Garden of 1887, which was restored in 2005. Reissued in December 1946, this outline records streets, building footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. It keeps the small courts and warehouse plots around St Joseph's Roman Catholic School, while later coloured revisions record an enlarged school with open grounds and Babington House flats. The sheet also names Stanhope Buildings, Mowbray Buildings, Douglas Buildings, Brent's Court and Vine Yard. Goad's working plans were made to weigh property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted overlays as uses changed and buildings were replaced. The sheet shows Nettlefold's iron warehouses, Smith Kendon's manufacturing chemists and paper stores near Lant Street, with St Joseph's Roman Catholic School and housing then interwoven among them. Lant Street itself is where the boy Dickens lodged in 1824. On this sheet, the enlarged school, its open grounds and Babington House flats replace part of the earlier pattern of small courts and warehouses.
