Prepared under the direction of American historian Joseph Roswell Hawley Moore and engraved by Williams Engraving Co. of New York, it was originally issued with Edward Channing’s History of the United States. Colour washes distinguish the advance of settlement from the seventeenth century to 1790, with older coastal settlement, the expanding interior frontier, towns and principal routes shown against a lightly engraved base.
