The lake fills the centre, ringed by the Mall, the boat houses, the Flats and the Malli Tal and Talli Tal bazaars, and a long List of Names locates its buildings: Government House, the Secretariat, the Naini Tal Club, the Grand and Royal hotels, the Capitol Cinema, Sherwood College, St Joseph’s, St Mary’s Convent and All Saints’. Number 70 is Corbett’s Gurney House, where the hunter of the man-eaters of Kumaon lived until he left for Kenya in 1947. Government House is still the governor’s summer residence, and the Secretariat now houses Uttarakhand’s High Court. Two insets show the routes into the hills and ‘The Snows from China’, the Himalayan wall of Trisul, Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot. This is the 1945 printing of the 1938 first edition.
