Neighbourhood names in red mark the grid squares, many still drawn as open fields, with the main employment areas shaded, roads under construction dashed and the boundary of the designated area hatched around the whole. Drawn by David L. Fryer & Co. on an Ordnance Survey base, the map candidly warns that some roads and projects may not be as advanced as shown. Designated in 1967, Milton Keynes has since grown to fill much of this outline, which makes the map an engaging record of a planned city taking shape.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028553a_620b1d8a-b821-404b-a4d6-9da2043c1f97.jpg?v=1792148862
kennedy-era-washington-dc-national-capital-region-radial-corridor-plan-1961-map-p-7-028555
Kennedy-era Washington DC—National Capital Region—Radial Corridor Plan 1961 map

'The Radial Corridor Plan—National Capital Region'

This is the image that shaped modern Washington: the Radial Corridor Plan of 1961, in which growth radiates from the capital along six corridors of new towns and transport, separated by protected green wedges of countryside. Chosen in A Policies Plan for the Year 2000 over sprawl, satellite cities and other alternatives, the corridor concept was adopted by President Kennedy in November 1962 as the basic development scheme for the National Capital Region, and its radial pattern is echoed in the Metro system that followed. The bold olive, grey and blue design is a fine example of mid-century planning graphics. Offered as the map with its facing explanatory key and text, two separate sheets from the original spiral-bound report, each about 25 × 25 cm.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028555a_6eda4316-0797-486d-bfb8-e90dbf4d2451.jpg?v=1792148861
