The plan shows the River Thames crossed by Westminster Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge and Southwark Bridge, with Waterloo Station, St Thomas' Hospital and Lambeth Palace beside it. The great change is Bethlehem Hospital on Lambeth Road, where the asylum left for Beckenham in 1930 and its building reopened as the Imperial War Museum in July 1936. Lambeth Palace remains the Archbishop of Canterbury's residence, while Waterloo served as the Eurostar terminal from 1994 to 2007. The key plan shows which detailed sheet covers each block. Those detailed sheets were used to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The key plan itself retains its June 1889 base heading and explicitly records revision to March 1971. Nelson Square was laid out around 1807, and Shelley lodged there in 1814, but the square lost its terraces to bombing. On this sheet the square is reshaped by Southwark's council blocks of 1956–64, namely Rowland Hill House, Vaughan House and Helen Gladstone House, which still stand today. In the Kennington inset, the sheet records substantial housing redevelopment, with Cottington Close replacing the older street-and-plot arrangement. The sheet also names Pakeman House, the Police Section House, Brutus Court and the Southern Region Railway arches, as well as the London Trustee Savings Bank, which later merged into Lloyds TSB. Sawmilling, joinery, engineering and storage premises around Great Suffolk Street and the railway arches show the productive work among Southwark's housing. The Union Theatre's later home in the Old Union Yard Arches on Union Street exemplifies the reuse of this railway fabric for culture and leisure. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording changed uses, demolition and rebuilding. Premises in the Newington inset are marked vacant in May 1968, and the latest dated correction, of March 1971, is a vacancy note on the north side of Hurlbutt Place. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in January 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. It catches Nelson Square on the eve of clearance. The square was laid out around 1807, and Shelley lodged there in 1814. It had lost many houses to bombing, and by 1950 the council was acquiring it all for housing. This outline of November 1952 preserves the Georgian street-and-plot framework that council blocks replaced between 1956 and 1964. Later coloured revisions record the change, with the Rowland Hill, Vaughan and Helen Gladstone blocks around the square and Cottington Close in the Kennington inset. The sheet also names Pakeman House and the Southern Region Railway approaches. Outlines record streets, building footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. Both kinds of plan served to weigh property and fire risk, and both were amended with pasted overlays as uses changed and buildings were replaced. No later pasted corrections have been identified on this outline edition, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. This March 1965 reissue records the centre, the School of Printing, roundabouts and pedestrian subways, which had replaced the industrial plots around Taylor's Yard, Draper Street and Black Prince Court. That comprehensive redevelopment has itself since been swept away. The centre closed in 2020 and was demolished in 2021 for shops, homes and a London College of Communication campus, which is the planned 2027 home of the former L.C.C. School of Printing and Graphic Arts. The sheet also names Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle, the London Transport Executive electricity substation, built in 1961 as the Michael Faraday Memorial, and the Elephant and Castle cinema, railway station and Underground station. The cinema later became the Coronet, whose live-music phase ran from 2003 to 2018 and included Justin Timberlake, Mumford & Sons and Tom Jones, who performed in March 2014. That concert venue lay decades ahead of the map; the building was demolished in 2021. It shows Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle as built, before the fire of 1898, the bombing of 1941 and the smaller rebuilding of 1957. At the time of the plan, Pastor's College and the Elephant and Castle Theatre, in Frank Matcham's rebuilding of 1879, stood beside Elephant and Castle station, Newington National School, the Drapers' Almshouses, Rabbits & Sons and a sperm-oil works. The college later became Spurgeon's College in South Norwood and closed in 2025, while the theatre later became the Coronet cinema, then a live-music venue from 2003 to 2018. Justin Timberlake, Mumford & Sons and Tom Jones, who appeared in March 2014, played there long after the theatrical use shown on this outline; the building was demolished in 2021. The outline records footprints with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans, and it preserves Taylors Depository, Draper Street, Black Prince Court and industrial plots. A coloured edition reissued in March 1965 shows them replaced by the Elephant and Castle shopping centre, the School of Printing, roundabouts and pedestrian subways. It shows numbered residential and commercial plots laid out before post-war rebuilding, and it preserves the denser arrangement of plots around Walworth Road, Brune Place and Clock Place, with undated corrections. Later coloured revisions record larger housing developments there, including Wollaston Close and Draper House, the London County Council tower of 1965. The junction of Walworth Road and Newington Butts is now dominated by Strata, the 147-metre residential tower completed in 2010. The South Eastern and Chatham Railway also crosses the plan.
