The sheet shows Compton Buildings, which were artisans' dwellings of 1871–7 with 371 flats. They reached the end of their leases in 1970, the year of the sheet's last dated correction, and Islington's Triangle estate replaced them in 1970–6. Beside the older commercial frontages, the sheet also records the blocks of post-war redevelopment, namely Tompion House, Earnshaw House, Grimthorpe House and Grayle House. Tompion House and Earnshaw House of 1946–9 were named after the clockmakers Tompion and Earnshaw, and Grimthorpe House was the LCC's 128-flat block of 1950–2. The LCC school shown on Compton Street, built in 1880–1, has been SS Peter and Paul Roman Catholic primary since 1978, and the Liverpool Shoe Company warehouse is also named. Printers and bookbinders around Northburgh Street and Goswell Road, a clothing factory and stores for graphic products and business machines reveal the commercial work behind the housing. Northburgh Street's later role in Clerkenwell's design economy is exemplified by NaughtOne's furniture showroom in the Old Trading House, a converted Victorian warehouse. The plans were kept for fire-risk assessment, and they carry pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was reissued in July 1936, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Percival Street, Malta Street, Cyrus Street, Dallington Street, Bastwick Street and Northburgh Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001139a_63d3351d-f7de-4bcb-a8c4-1160469e7ba7.jpg?v=1792149067
goad-london-133-ec1-clerkenwell-charterhouse-goswell-rd-berry-st-1952-1970-map-p-9-001141
Goad London 133—EC1—Clerkenwell—Charterhouse—Goswell Rd—Berry St 1952 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 133 [Clerkenwell Road, Goswell Road, the Charterhouse and St Bartholomew's Medical College]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 133, covers the Charterhouse and St Bartholomew's Medical College (EC1), both of which are still in place today. The Charterhouse, Thomas Sutton's almshouse of 1611 on a Carthusian site of 1371, appears here with its Pensioners' Court and The Green. It still houses over forty Brothers, and it opened its museum in January 2017. St Bartholomew's Medical College, shown with its medical laboratories and lecture hall, merged into Queen Mary in 1995 as Barts and The London, which keeps the Charterhouse Square campus. North of Clerkenwell Road, by contrast, clothing factories and textile and leather trades then filled the blocks beside the Allied Breweries garage, marking a sharp division between the district's working and institutional halves. The plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they carry pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971.
