In red, three new tubes are shown under construction: the Baker Street & Waterloo (now the Bakerloo line), opened in 1906; the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton (now the Piccadilly line), also 1906; and the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead (now the Northern line), opened in 1907, whose Highgate terminus is today's Archway. Alongside them run the pioneering tubes already open: the City & South London (also now part of the Northern line), the Central London Railway (now the Central line), the Waterloo & City, and the Great Northern & City to Moorgate. Other authorised lines, such as the City & Brixton Railway and the North West London Railway towards Cricklewood, were never built; Brixton waited until the Victoria line arrived in 1971. The station names are a delight in themselves: Cranbourn Street (opened as Leicester Square), Dover Street (now Green Park), Trafalgar Square (now Charing Cross), British Museum (closed 1933), Strand on the Holborn branch (later Aldwych, closed 1994), and even the misspelt 'Mornington Cresent'. Prepared by the Ordnance Survey for the Royal Commission on London Traffic at three inches to the mile, the map sets the deep-level tubes against the blue Metropolitan and District lines and the black main-line railways, with interchange stations ringed. Drawn on a true geographical base nearly three decades before Harry Beck's diagram, it shows exactly where the lines ran beneath the streets. Large and graphically striking, it catches the Underground on the eve of its decisive expansion.
