It plots the Nordschleife, Südschleife and Start-und-Zielschleife, with entrances, numbered parking and spectator areas; the original “Schutzgebühr DM 1,-” appears at lower right. The Nordschleife is measured at 22.810 km, identifying its formidable pre-1967 configuration, before the Hohenrain chicane lengthened the lap. This was the mountain circuit Jackie Stewart would christen the “Green Hell”: blind crests, jumps, changeable weather and limited access made modern F1 safety increasingly costly and impractical. Even extensive 1970–73 works could not secure its future.
