Holford and Wright's 1950 scheme numbered a bus station, a broad new Guildhall Street, a New Emmanuel Street, sections of relief road, a new bridge near Magdalene, shops and a garage near Park Street, and an eventual new bridge at Mill Lane. Few were built as drawn: the Lion Yard redevelopment of the 1970s took a different course, and the bridges never came. The drawing remains a beautifully detailed portrait of the colleges, streets and river as they stood in 1950, and a sobering glimpse of what nearly changed.

'Form and height of buildings in Cambridge—Petty Cury—King's Parade'

Two long street elevations record the shopfronts, gables and chimneys of King's Parade and the north side of Petty Cury as they stood in 1950, drawn to scale for Holford and Wright's Cambridge Planning Proposals. Behind them loom grey silhouettes of four of the town's largest buildings, Addenbrooke's Hospital, the University Arms Hotel, the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Guildhall, placed there to show how far they exceeded the scale of an ordinary street. The south side of Petty Cury was redeveloped for Lion Yard in the 1970s, and Addenbrooke's left its Trumpington Street building in 1976, so the sheet is both a clever piece of planning graphics and a record of a changing centre.
