Its 57-entry key runs from Mimolette and Maroilles in the north to Roquefort, Banon and Niolo in the south and on Corsica. Familiar names share space with less familiar regional specialities and processed cheeses, making this a portrait of French food culture as well as a geographical display. The map predates Saint Agur, the creamy blue cheese created in 1988. Banon, pictured here wrapped in leaves, represents a much older tradition, although its protected French appellation was awarded only in 2003. The contrast between creamy interiors, coloured rinds and autumnal leaves gives the composition its warmth. A striking kitchen or dining-room map, with plenty to discover at close quarters.
