Land is graded from the Land Utilisation Survey's best farmland in green to the poorest in yellow, while green hatching marks proposed preservation areas, including much of the North Downs, later protected as the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Built-up areas, public land, railways and a network of existing and proposed major roads approved by the County Council in November 1945 complete the picture, from the London suburbs to Thanet and Dover. Drawn by James W. R. Adams, County Planning Officer, and dated 1946, it was published in Planning Basis for Kent (1948).

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028579a_93f73940-095a-4f3e-bb9d-ffaeb375e60e.jpg?v=1792148900
kent-shopping-constellations-retail-catchment-hub-towns-villages-map-adams-1948-p-7-028580
Kent shopping constellations—retail catchment hub towns/villages map—Adams 1948

'County of Kent—County planning survey—Characteristics of urban communities and shopping centres used by villages'

Kent's villages are linked to their shopping towns by bursts of green rays on this wonderfully graphic map, which turns the county's everyday shopping trips into a constellation of starbursts. Concentric coloured rings classify each town of 10,000 people or more by character, with the most important characteristic on the outside: dormitory, residential, industrial, agricultural market, fishing, resort or military establishment. Canterbury, Maidstone and Ashford sit at the centre of the largest catchments. Drawn by James W. R. Adams, County Planning Officer, for the County Planning Survey, dated 1946 and published in Planning Basis for Kent (1948), it is a brilliant example of mid-century social geography presented as graphic design.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028580a_2d80976d-6ec7-4bc0-af44-487e21802cac.jpg?v=1792148905
