Extending across the historic city and its extensive cantonment, the plan records roads, railways, bazaars, civil and military buildings, compounds, open ground, watercourses and surrounding topography with the precision characteristic of official Indian surveying. Rawalpindi was then one of British India’s most important garrison centres, serving as the winter headquarters of Northern Command and as a strategic railway gateway towards Peshawar and the North-West Frontier. Measuring approximately 93.5 × 103.5 cm, the map is dissected and mounted on canvas for repeated field use.
