A bold red line encloses the country between Lambourn, Wantage, Blewbury and Streatley where permission to manoeuvre had been obtained; outside it troops were to keep to roads and commons. Dashed red loops mark the ‘Training Courses’ on the downs above Lambourn and East Ilsley, then as now racehorse-training country. Over the one-inch Ordnance Survey base is a red grid of lettered and numbered squares, an early experiment in map referencing, decades before the National Grid. Zincographed at Southampton in 1894, and offered with the Report on Cavalry Manœuvres printed in 1895.
