Roberts visited Gaza in March 1839 during the journey that supplied the drawings for his celebrated Holy Land series, and the scene retains the drama of the original conception: ruins, mounted figures, distant minarets and the sunlit coastal plain create a powerful Orientalist image of a city long associated with biblical, classical and Ottoman history. This later Cassell lithographic edition brought Roberts’s views to a wider Victorian audience than the expensive original folio issue.
