Drawn up at the height of the crisis, it marks the sites for 1,000- and 2,000-mile missiles and air bases believed fit for Ilyushin-28 bombers, and explains that the blockade aimed to keep Soviet weapons out of ports like Bahía Honda and Banes. Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles on 28 October, but the quarantine lasted until 20 November, when he agreed to withdraw the bombers too. Elmer Wexler’s silhouettes of missiles, anti-aircraft batteries, submarine pens and Soviet ships crowd the ochre island, among vignettes of its past from San Juan Hill to the Bay of Pigs. John Dille’s report, ‘Daring Missions That Bared Cuba’s Secrets’, tells how the anti-Castro underground smuggled out some of the intelligence behind it.

'Silicon Valley — Rent-a-Computer — 1994'

Silicon Valley on the eve of the dot-com boom, drawn as a cartoon townscape in which the companies are the landmarks. Apple’s rainbow logo sits at the bottom left beside a Newton handheld, and IBM at the bottom right beside a ThinkPad. Between them crowd Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, TSMC, National Semiconductor, Creative Labs, Verbatim, Network General, Oak Technology, Cylink and scores of smaller chip-makers, circuit-board shops and software houses, each with its own building and sign, strung along Highways 101, 280, 680, 880, 85, 237 and 17 and the Lawrence Expressway. Media Vision is there too, months before a fraud scandal brought the Fremont sound-card maker down, and at HCL America an American and an Indian businessman shake hands in front of their flags. The Golden Gate Bridge peeps in at the top, the San Jose Sharks and Great America make an appearance, and a smiling sun, a Rikei hot-air balloon and a Rent-a-Computer blimp float overhead. This is the hardware valley before the internet remade it: when Thomas Mikkelsen signed the artwork in 1993, Netscape, Yahoo and eBay did not yet exist, and Google was five years away. The Ultimate Poster Company of San Jose issued it as Rent-a-Computer’s calendar for 1994, nearly a metre tall, with a gold script title above the map and the full year’s calendar below. A quarter-size version is in the David Rumsey Map Collection.
