Published at 1:1,000,000 in November 1901, it combines dense relief, rivers, settlements, roads and the expanding Russian railway network. Its exceptional feature is a set of apparently contemporary manuscript routes and notes in blue and black. These identify Samarkand, Rostovtsevo station and an approximately 85-kilometre ‘chemin de fer aérien’—an aerial cableway rather than an air route—associated with coal mining. A British intelligence summary compiled in 1908 describes the Rostovtsevo–Suok Bulok aerial cableway as 54 miles (86.9 km) long and under construction in 1907 to transport coal from Suok Bulok.
