Based on Survey Department mapping, it records the street network, railway, harbour and named public buildings, with Queenstown, Bukit Timah, Serangoon and the airport at Paya Lebar extending beyond the densely built centre. Toa Payoh is still sparsely developed, before its transformation into a Housing and Development Board new town in the 1960s. Paya Lebar, marked as Singapore Airport, recalls the city’s international gateway before Changi opened in 1981. An enlarged inset follows the Singapore River through the commercial and civic district, identifying Raffles Place, City Hall, the Supreme Court and Clifford Pier. Its numbered grid and scales in miles and feet make this a practical street-reference map. The contrast between the tightly packed city centre and the more sparsely developed outskirts is especially clear.
