The Charterhouse, Thomas Sutton's almshouse of 1611 on a Carthusian site of 1371, appears here with its Pensioners' Court and The Green. It still houses over forty Brothers, and it opened its museum in January 2017. St Bartholomew's Medical College, shown with its medical laboratories and lecture hall, merged into Queen Mary in 1995 as Barts and The London, which keeps the Charterhouse Square campus. North of Clerkenwell Road, by contrast, clothing factories and textile and leather trades then filled the blocks beside the Allied Breweries garage, marking a sharp division between the district's working and institutional halves. The plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they carry pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include St John Street, Northburgh Street, Great Sutton Street, Berry Street, Goswell Road and Charterhouse Buildings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001141a_a93c0991-3b39-4dec-96d4-53b92611ce97.jpg?v=1792149069
goad-london-134-ec1-charterhouse-sq-aldersgate-st-barbican-stn-1952-1970-map-p-9-001142
Goad London 134—EC1—Charterhouse Sq—Aldersgate St—Barbican Stn 1952 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 134 [The Charterhouse, Charterhouse Square, Aldersgate Street and Barbican Station]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 134, covers Charterhouse Square, Aldersgate Street and Barbican Station (EC1), and its leading feature is The Charterhouse. A priory of 1371 and Thomas Sutton's almshouse since 1611, it is drawn court by court, with its chapel and Great Hall, Master's Court, Preachers' Court and Wash House Court. In 1952 the Great Hall and Master's Court, which had been burnt out in the Blitz, were midway through their 1950–59 restoration. The almshouse still houses its Brothers, and it opened a museum in January 2017. St Bartholomew's Medical College, which has been in the former school buildings since 1933, remains a Barts medical campus. The station is labelled Aldersgate and Barbican, a name that was dropped in December 1968. The corner of Long Lane and Lindsey Street now holds Farringdon's Elizabeth line ticket hall, which opened in May 2022. The mantle factory in Glasshouse Yard, gown and millinery premises and nearby typesetters reveal a working district of clothing and print trades beside the Charterhouse. Glasshouse Yard later became home to Audible's UK headquarters and recording studios, bringing digital audio publishing into this former manufacturing quarter. Kept for insurers rating property and fire risk, the sheet carries pasted slips recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding, and its latest dated correction is March 1970. It was resurveyed and reissued in June 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971.
