This March 1965 reissue records the centre, the School of Printing, roundabouts and pedestrian subways, which had replaced the industrial plots around Taylor's Yard, Draper Street and Black Prince Court. That comprehensive redevelopment has itself since been swept away. The centre closed in 2020 and was demolished in 2021 for shops, homes and a London College of Communication campus, which is the planned 2027 home of the former L.C.C. School of Printing and Graphic Arts. The sheet also names Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle, the London Transport Executive electricity substation, built in 1961 as the Michael Faraday Memorial, and the Elephant and Castle cinema, railway station and Underground station. The cinema later became the Coronet, whose live-music phase ran from 2003 to 2018 and included Justin Timberlake, Mumford & Sons and Tom Jones, who performed in March 2014. That concert venue lay decades ahead of the map; the building was demolished in 2021. These plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they carry pasted overlays recording new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding, although none of the overlays here is dated. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in March 1965, with a 1965 copyright date, and a key plan for this area acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. It shows Spurgeon's Metropolitan Tabernacle as built, before the fire of 1898, the bombing of 1941 and the smaller rebuilding of 1957. At the time of the plan, Pastor's College and the Elephant and Castle Theatre, in Frank Matcham's rebuilding of 1879, stood beside Elephant and Castle station, Newington National School, the Drapers' Almshouses, Rabbits & Sons and a sperm-oil works. The college later became Spurgeon's College in South Norwood and closed in 2025, while the theatre later became the Coronet cinema, then a live-music venue from 2003 to 2018. Justin Timberlake, Mumford & Sons and Tom Jones, who appeared in March 2014, played there long after the theatrical use shown on this outline; the building was demolished in 2021. The outline records footprints with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans, and it preserves Taylors Depository, Draper Street, Black Prince Court and industrial plots. A coloured edition reissued in March 1965 shows them replaced by the Elephant and Castle shopping centre, the School of Printing, roundabouts and pedestrian subways. Goad's plans were kept to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding, though none here is dated. A key plan for this area acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Campbell Buildings were railway dwellings of about 1890 for railway employees, and they were demolished in the early 1980s. The G.L.C. workshops and offices shown here maintained vehicles and municipal services. Morley College, founded in 1889, was rebuilt in 1958 after the Blitz destroyed its Victorian building, and it merged with Kensington and Chelsea College in 2020. Christ Church, also shown on the sheet, still keeps its Lincoln Tower of 1876, which was half paid for by Americans, and the sheet names St George's R.C. Primary School and Lambeth police station as well. Goad kept these underwriters' plans current with pasted overlays recording changed uses, revised layouts, demolition and new building. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction is an under-construction note of March 1971 on the G.L.C. garage and flats in block 2620, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971. Printing and engineering premises then stood beside the institute, placing industry and technical education side by side. The London College of Printing and Graphic Arts moved to its new Elephant and Castle premises in 1962, with the formal opening following in 1964. It was renamed the London College of Communication in 2004, and it now plans to move across the road in 2027. The Crabtree Vickers printing-press works shown here bore a name that existed only from 1966, when Vickers formed the company after buying the Leeds press-makers R. W. Crabtree. Nearby stood the London College of Printing and Graphic Arts, which is now the London College of Communication and is planning a move across the road in 2027. The National College for Heating, Ventilating, Refrigeration and Fan Engineering, which merged with the Borough Polytechnic in 1970, also stood close by. Perronet House, the GLC tower completed in May 1970, is drawn with its ground-floor shops still proposed, next to the March 1971 vacancies on London Road.
