The darkest shading concentrates in western Victoria and Wan Chai, contrasting with the lighter categories across much of Kowloon. Stonecutters Island still stands apart from the mainland, preserving another striking difference from the later reclaimed coastline. The harbourfront, tightly packed streets and Kai Tak airfield anchor a city whose relationship with the water has since changed dramatically. Printed in August 1952, this folding plan lets the eye move between individual streets and the larger pattern of urban density. Its attraction lies in that combination: a recognisable Hong Kong city plan that also asks where, and how closely together, people lived.
