Sheet 66C N.W. Edition 3 A [joined to sheet 66C S.W.: Saint-Quentin–La Fère]

The British front before the storm of 21 March 1918, when Operation Michael opened the German Spring Offensive with the Battle of St Quentin. The offensive, also known as the Kaiserschlacht (“Emperor’s Battle” or “Kaiser’s Battle”) and the Ludendorff Offensive, shattered the defences of Gough’s Fifth Army, which had taken over this stretch from the French only in January. Joined vertically and over a metre tall, these 1:20,000 sheets cover Saint-Quentin to La Fère, with British positions in blue and German defences in red; the northern sheet was corrected to 13 January 1918 and the southern printed in February. The manuscript additions strongly suggest a British artillery communications map: magenta routes around Ly-Fontaine and Remigny link lettered points through numbered intermediates, including LM1–LM6, probably identifying buried telephone cables and their testing or connection points. Pencilled battery references and ‘OP’ markings indicate artillery positions and observation posts. The most plausible interpretation is that British signals or artillery personnel annotated it in February–March 1918 to organise and maintain links between guns, observers and headquarters before the German attack.
