Trinity House laid out the squares in 1824–32 and 1853–56 and still owns them, and today their terraces are listed and the Merrick Square gardens are railed. Behind the frontages then worked the Tower Pill \u0026amp; Tablet Co., manufacturing chemists, a tin-box and canister factory, and the sorting office's loading banks and garages. The Keymarkets offices, Shere House, Redman House and Silvester Buildings were there too, and the Keymarkets chain was absorbed into Gateway in 1983. On this sheet, the consolidated South Eastern District Post Office site, tenements and playground space replace smaller commercial plots, which marks a substantial change in the Borough High Street district. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction is a March 1971 vacancy annotation in block 2414. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in December 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and a key plan for this area acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. It shows the Trinity Church Square terraces and the Merrick Square gardens, both of which are still owned by Trinity House. Trinity Church Square's King Alfred statue was found in 2021 to be a Roman figure of about AD 80–130 below the waist. In Lant Street the boy Dickens lodged in 1824 while his father was in the Marshalsea. Among the back ways the sheet shows are Avon Place, Hulme Place and Swan Yard. Reissued in December 1943, this outline records streets, footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. It preserves smaller commercial plots that later coloured revisions show replaced by the consolidated South Eastern District Post Office site, tenements and playground space. Goad's working plans existed to price property and fire risk, and pasted overlays kept them current with changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Holy Trinity Church, Francis Bedford's building of 1823–24, was disused when the London Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestras chose it in 1970. It reopened in 1975 as the Henry Wood Hall for orchestral rehearsal and recording, and so it joins the square's religious past to a musical present. Reissued in December 1943, this outline records streets, footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. It preserves the small plots around Rockingham Street and Falmouth Road, which later coloured revisions show replaced by larger housing blocks, with tenements under construction in March 1971. Holy Trinity Church survives as the Henry Wood Hall, opened in 1975 for orchestral rehearsal and recording. This makes a quiet counterpart to the housing redevelopment on the sheet, where larger blocks replace small plots around Rockingham Street and Falmouth Road, with tenements under construction in March 1971. Borough police station is still Southwark's police station, but the Inner London Quarter Sessions Courts 6 and 7 disappeared when quarter sessions were abolished on 1 January 1972. In the sheet's day, the County Court (juvenile), the G.P.O. sorting office and Victoria Hall anchored the changing street pattern. Goad's plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording new uses, layouts, demolition and rebuilding.
